About Armed Forces Tribunal

In India, a military court is known as the Armed Forces Tribunal (AFT). It was established in connection with the Armed Forces Tribunal Act of 2007 to offer rapid and cost-effective resolution of grievances for active-duty and retired military personnel.

The AFT has appellate jurisdiction over court-martial cases and initial jurisdiction over service affairs involving the Army, Air Force, and Navy. Additionally, it has the authority to issue bail to anyone detained by the military who is charged with a crime.

In addition to having regional benches in Chandigarh, Lucknow, Kolkata, Guwahati, Chennai, Kochi, Mumbai, Jabalpur, Srinagar, and Jaipur, the AFT has its main office in New Delhi.

The Indian President appoints the AFT’s members, who serve in a quasi-judicial capacity. The Tribunal adheres to the method used in India’s High Courts.
